A study published in JAMA Network Open revealed that when patients on a commonly prescribed blood thinner stop taking aspirin, their risk of bleeding complications decreases significantly. The 6,700 patients receiving anticoagulation therapy for both atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heartbeat that can result in stroke, and venous thromboembolism, or blood clots, at anticoagulation clinics around Michigan were included in the research. Patients were given aspirin in addition to the standard blood thinner warfarin as part of their treatment, despite not having any history of heart disease.

Dr. Geoffrey Barnes, M.D., a cardiologist at the University of Michigan Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center, stated that they worked with the clinics to limit aspirin use among individuals for whom it might not be essential. He added that aspirin is not a panacea medicine as it was formerly believed to be and might increase the risk of bleeding events in certain of these patients. According to the study findings, aspirin use among patients decreased by 46.6% over the course of the clinical study. With aspirin used less commonly, the risk of a bleeding complication dropped by 32.3%, amounting to one major bleeding event prevented per every 1,000 patients who stop taking aspirin.

On the other hand, Dr. Jordan Schaefer, M.D., a hematologist at U-M Health and clinical associate professor of internal medicine at U-M Medical School, stated that for some people, aspirin can be lifesaving. However, the biggest challenge is when some people take aspirin without a history of cardiovascular disease along with an anticoagulant.
